DOSH: 300 employers taken to court annually

New Straits Times Online, 17 March 2014

DUNGUN: About 300 employers were taken to court annually by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH) for various offences under the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994.

Its director-general, Datuk Dr Johari Basri, said the offences often committed by the employers included failure to register their companies and employees, as well as late reporting of accidents at their workplaces.

"There are also employers who are prosecuted for failing to ensure the safety, health and welfare of their employees and also for not complying with the work system based on a standard set by the department," he added.

However, he said, following various campaigns conducted by the department, there had been better awareness among employers to provide a safe work place for their employees.

He told this to reporter at a function to commemorate 10 million hours of accident free by  Newwin Engineering (M) Sdn Bhd, near Paka here today.

He said the accident rate at workplaces had dropped by 30 per cent and the department was targeting to reduce the accident rate to 3 per 1,000 people by 2015, from 3.2 per 1,000 people currently. -- BERNAMA
