Proposal to improve building ecosystem to be tabled — Fadillah

Borneo Post Online, 22 February 2014

ALOR SETAR: The Works Ministry will table a proposal to improve the overall ecosystem of the construction sector to reduce the risk of accident or disaster project to the cabinet soon.

Its minister, Datuk Fadillah Yusof, said a special committee comprising experts in various fields was studying the ecosystems involved, which included legal aspects and safety during and after the construction process.

He said besides the Department of Occupational Safety and Health DOSH), members of the special committee, which was formed last year, also included architects, engineers and industry players.

“We’ll get the feedback (from the committee) end of this month on the overall building ecosystem.

“Then, we’ll see what can be improved before submitting to the cabinet for action by the relevant ministries or sectors at the state and federal levels,” he told reporters during a working visit to Kedah yesterday.

Fadillah said the committee would study weaknesses of laws in the construction sector, as well as improve coordination between the private and government agencies.

He said the ministry would also focus on the attitude of contractors where they should comply with the standard set and to always ensure the safety and health of their workers. — Bernama
