DOSH gets safety procedure plan for work at stadium

New Straits Times Online, 14 March 2013

KUALA TERENGGANU: The contractor for the dismantling of the Sultan Mizan Zainal Abidin stadium roof has submitted a safety procedure proposal to the Department of Occupational Safety and Health.

The dismantling work was stopped by the Terengganu DOSH after the west wing roof structure collapsed while being taken down on Feb 20, injuring five workers.

Terengganu DOSH director Kormain Mohd Noor said yesterday the proposal outlining the safety measures to be taken would determine whether the contractor could resume dismantling the west wing roof structure at the stadium.

Kormain said the department's officers would take three days to study the proposal.

"After the study is completed, we will refer the proposal to the Public Works Department for their opinion.

"We will also refer the matter to experts at the Institution of Engineers."

Kormain said getting professional opinions was to ensure that the proposed procedures would ensure the safety of the workers doing the dismantling.

Kormain said the closure of the work site would be extended pending the final decision on the case.

On Feb 20, three workers suffered serious injuries while two were slightly injured after the west wing roof frame of the stadium collapsed while they were dismantling it .

The east wing roof had collapsed on June 2, 2009 and the repair work had started last year.
