'Crane contractors may face action'

New Straits Times Online, 20 Aug 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: The Construction Industry Malaysia Development Board will not hesitate to take disciplinary action against the contractors responsible for the crane that fell at the LRT runway extension project in Subang Jaya recently.

Selangor CIDB director Mohd Zaid Zakaria said the contractors would be held liable if the board's investigations showed negligence on their part.

Speaking of last Saturday's incident where a crane arm crashed onto a car at the LRT Line Extension Project on the Kelana Jaya Line in Subang Jaya, Zaki said it was being investigated by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health (DOSH).

"The investigations are carried out by DOSH in accordance with Rule 15 of the Contractor Registration Regulations 1995. Among the actions CIDB is allowed to take is to cancel, withdraw or suspend the registration of any contractor found to be negligent by the court or any board of inquiry under any written law."

Investigations showed that the crane operator was a registered construction cardholder certified by DOSH.

"The cranes used at the construction site were also registered under the Hoisting/Lift Machine Permit registration and approved by DOSH."

Zaki said the LRT track extension project by Syarikat Prasarana Negara Berhad (SPNB) is divided into Package A and B where Trans Resources Corporation Sdn Bhd and Sunway Construction Sdn Bhd, respectively, were the assigned contractors.
