NewStraitsTimes Online, 10 April 2014

GEORGE TOWN: A 38-year-old Indonesian immigrant worker fell to his death from the 22nd floor to the 8th floor of a construction site in Jalan Cantonment, Penang.

The 9.30am incident also involved two other construction workers who sustained serious injuries following a similar fall through the scaffolding attached to the 22nd floor of the 31-floor building.

Bagan Jermal Fire and Rescue Department chief A.Ravi said the trio were doing wall plastering and tiling works on the 22nd floor prior to the incident.

"Our initial investigations showed  the wooden plank the trio had stepped on snapped due to overload.

"They fell through the scaffoldings on their way down to the lower floors, " Ravi said.

He said the trio landed on the 8th floor and suffered multiple bodily and head injuries.

Ravi said the victim who broke multiple bones died on-the-spot while the other two workers, an Indonesian and a Myanmar national are fighting for their lives at Penang Hospital.

Meanwhile, the Penang Island Municipal Council has slapped a stop-work order on the construction works pending further notice.

Pulau Tikus assemblywoman Yap Soo Huey said the MPPP Building Department would conduct investigations into the work safety features at the construction site.
