Accidents in workplace drops 50 per cent within ten-year period: Niosh

NewStraitsTimes Online, 8 April 2014

LABUAN: Cases, involving accidents in the workplace, have decreased to over 50 per cent within a 10-year period from 63,423 cases in 2002 to 33,060 cases last year.

National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (Niosh) chairman Tan Sri Lee Lam Thye said this was a good development, with the statistics projected to fall further.

"It is impossible to get zero accident in the workplace and, as such, we focus on reducing the accident rate by inculcating the safety aspect as important in our daily life and needed to taken seriously by every employer, workers and the public," he told reporters here.

He said Niosh would continue to execute its responsibility to increase workers' safety and health status through curriculum development and training programmes that were relevant to any government departments or private agencies in the country.

On accidents to and from the workplace, he said, such cases had decreased to 25,439 last year from 26,262 in 2012.

He said several factors were blamed for such accidents but the three factors that needed to be taken into account to reduce them, included vehicle inspection before use, abstaining from driving fast and compliance to road regulations. -- BERNAMA
