Socso to hold safety awareness programme for boat operators

NewStraitsTimes Online, 21 March 2014

KUCHING: The Social Security Organisation (Socso) will hold a safety awareness programme for boat and ferry operators at SK Paris in Balingian on March 23.

State Socso director John Riba Marin said the target group for the programme, which is the first in its series, were boat and ferry operators in and around Balingian, Mukah and Dalat.

He said the programme was initiated following the frequent occurrence of boat incidents in those areas as boats were the main mode of transportation.

"Officers from the Sarawak River Board and Socso will brief the participants on the safety procedures and measures, including the need for all passengers to wear life jackets while on board," John Riba told Bernama here today.

He said during the programme, Socso would also distribute new life jackets to boat operators.

Meanwhile, John Riba said Socso would continue locating employers who had not registered with the organisation and failed to make their Socso contributions for their employees on time.

"We recorded 63 cases of employers failing to register and pay Socso contributions for their workers during the statewide operation, dubbed Ops Kesan, last year.

"We are very strict on this matter because it involves workers' rights and their social safety issues," he said.

John Riba said employers who were found guilty of not registering or failing to contribute to Socso could face a fine of up to RM10,000 or imprisonment for not more than two years, or both.

Those unsure of their status are advised to check with Socso office or at www.perkeso.gov.my. -- BERNAMA
