Four contractors charged for not registering with CIDB

BorneoPost Online, 21 Jun 2013

KUCHING: Four contractors in the state are charged for failing to register with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).

State CIDB director Mohd Merzan Hashim said all contractors had to register with the board or they infringed the regulations.

“We have dragged four contractors to court so far this year. They did not register with CIDB, so we are uncertain of their class,” he told journalists after opening a seminar on the CIDB Act, Act 520 (Amendment) 2011 at a leading hotel here yesterday.

Some 50 industry players attended the half-day seminar conducted by CIDB Enforcement director Abdul Razak Husin.

Merzan, however, did not give details on the four contractors.

When asked about accidents at construction sites in the state, he said there had been several incidents but had no figure offhand.

“I do not have the statistics with me, but accidents do happen. In fact, accidents at work are more of the jurisdictions of the Department of Safety and Health (DOSH).”

In his speech earlier, Merzan said the amended Act was meant to enhance the image of the construction industry in the nation. The amendment was recently passed in Parliament while enforcement is expected within the year.

He added that the Act was amended to ensure contractors in the country opted for standard building materials.

“Although construction industry is among the oldest industries in the country, it is not without shortcomings. Among the issues faced by the industry are low quality products and a lack of skilled workforce.

“Hence, CIDB will carry out various programmes to not only help enhance the quality of constructions, but also emphasise the importance of professionalism and innovation.”
