Round-the-clock safety monitoring at LRT building sites
The Star Online, 18 April 2014
GREATER safety measures have been put in place at Prasarana’s construction sites, including the launch of a safety patrol unit (SPU).
The unit will conduct round-the-clock monitoring of the LRT Line Extension Project and the Bus Rapid Transit (BRT) project, supervise and rectify any unsafe conditions as well as provide fast response during emergency and crisis situations at the construction sites.
Syarikat Prasarana Negara Bhd’s (Prasarana) group managing director Datuk Seri Shahril Mokhtar said this at the inaugural Health, Safety, and Environment conference on the LRT Line Extension Project at the Sime Darby Convention Centre.
“One of the key improvements in the LRT extension project is the enhancement of Health, Safety, and Environment (HSE) checks and monitoring.
“It is indeed a challenge in managing mega projects within highly urbanised and populated areas, but we are committed to ensure that the team has a good HSE culture and robust HSE system to manage the safety of employees, workers, and the communities we operate in.
“Despite the challenges that we experienced in the initial stages of the construction, we are determined to pursue continuous improvement of our HSE processes with support from the regulators, as well as our contractors and consultants,’’ he said.
The conference was jointly organised by Prasarana and Opus Group Bhd, and supported by the various companies involved in the LRT extension project.
Opus Group managing director Nik Airina Nik Jaffar said the conference themed “Lead, Educate, and Practice”, was aimed at highlighting best HSE practices. More than 200 people attended the one-day conference.
A total of 12 papers on a wide range of topics were presented, including Environmental Impact Assessment monitoring and control, HSE best practices, and Safety Practices Towards Zero Accidents.
The conference was launched by Occupational Safety and Health Malaysia (DOSH) Department director-general Datuk Dr Johari Basri.
