Going down: Demolition of the five remaining blocks of Pekeliling Flats along Jalan Tun Razak is expected to take about two years before the area is re-developed in to a mixed development project called Taman Sari.

EXPERTS have offered to help in the demolition of the Pekeliling Flats.

Kuala Lumpur mayor Datuk Seri Ahmad Phesal Talib said the interested parties’ details would be given to government-appointed developer Asie Development Sdn Bhd, which is responsible for demolishing the structures.

“Hopefully this will speed things up. We expect the demolition to be fully completed in two years as they are doing it floor by floor, block by block,” he said.

There are five blocks in total that will be demolished with Block A and B, which is next to Jalan Tun Razak, a priority.

“The Prime Minister has expressed concern as the buildings are an eyesore. The method used to demolish the blocks does not involve any blasts,” he said.

Ahmad Phesal also said Asie had submitted its redevelopment plans for the iconic flats.

“It will be a mixed development project with residential and office space. However, we will consider adding an affordable homes component,” Ahmad Phesal said in a press conference after launching a flag flying event in conjunction with Federal Territories Day.

There will be a scaled down 40th anniversary of the Federal Territories that include Putrajaya and Labuan.

Residents can still look forward to a RM30 traffic compound fine offer from Feb 1 to March 8, free use of Kuala Lumpur City Hall’s sports facilities, free membership of library, free boat and pony rides at Taman Tasik Titiwangsa as well as free use of public toilets in the capital throughout February.
