Ceiling collapses at Serdang Hospital ward

News Straits Times Online, 1 October 2013

KUALA LUMPUR: A section of Serdang Hospital's ceiling in the maternity ward collapsed yesterday, the third such incident since it started operating in December 2005.

Serdang Hospital director Datuk Dr Ardi Awang said part of the ceiling collapsed at 3am at the ward's patient admission centre.

"At the time of the incident, eight patients and six medical officers were in the ward."

No injuries were reported and there was no disruption to its operations.

"An investigation into the incident has started and we have sent a full report to the Selangor Health Department and the Health Ministry."

In January 2011, the ceiling at the hospital's main lobby collapsed.

In August last year, 15 pieces of ceiling panels at the hospital's Emergency Department crashed, injuring three nurses and a doctor.

Health Minister Datuk Seri Dr S. Subramaniam told reporters at the Parliament lobby yesterday that the Public Works Department (PWD) would conduct a thorough check to ensure the structure of the hospital was up to par.

The building of the hospital, he said, came under the purview of PWD.

"I have asked the hospital and PWD to furnish me with a report and from the report, I will be able to ascertain if there has been poor standard in the construction which leads to these incidences."
