KUALA TERENGGANU: The villagers in Kampung Tebauk in Bukit Tunggal here had a rude shock when they discovered the ceiling of their year-old mosque, caved in early this morning.

The the whole section of the ceiling in the prayer hall suddenly collapsed at 4am.

Luckily, no one was injured as it was still too early and the congregation will normally arrived for the suboh prayers at around 5am.

According to mosque committee member Mohd Jamal Ngah, 50, the mosque's muezzin Man Mat, in his 60s, was the first to discover the incident.

"He arrived at 5.15am to get ready to call the 'azan' for the Subuh prayer but was surprised to see that all the lights at the mosque had gone out."

"He used his torchlight to investigate and was shocked to discover that the prayer hall ceiling had collapsed ," he said.

Mohd Jamal said Man then informed the mosque committee members and villagers about the incident.

"We had to perform the Subuh prayer in the dark as none of the lights were working," he said.

Meanwhile, state secretary Datuk Mazlan Ngah said he was saddened as it was the second incident involving a mosque this year after the foyer roof of the Kampung Binjai Kertas mosque in Hulu Terengganu collapsed on May 20. He said the state Public Works Department (PWD) had informed him that they will look into the design and construction of the supporting structure together with the Department of Occupational Safety and Health report in their investigation into the case.

The state PWD will hold a press conference at 3pm today on the incident.
