PENAMPANG: A Form 4 student was rushed to hospital after he came into contact with mercury in a school lab near here this morning.

The student, identified as Joshua Vinilis Johny from SM St Michael, sustained minor injuries on his hand when the chemical spilled from a broken thermometer.

State Fire and Rescue public relations officer Mohd Affendy K Ramin said the department received a distress call at 8.43am and deployed 15 firefighters to the scene.

“The team has placed a 100m cordon around the mercury spill area to ensure safety and prevent any untoward incident.

“There were about 20 students in the vicinity at the time of the incident, and they have all been safely evacuated,” he said.

Affendy said the fire and rescue team had carried out cleaning work using sulphur and had placed the dangerous chemical in a disposable bag.
