Hotel wins workplace safety award

GREAT ACHIEVEMENT: Eastin Hotel Penang has won many awards since its opening in 2009

GEORGE TOWN: EASTIN Hotel Penang received the "Best Award" in the National Excellence Occupational Safety and Health (OSH) award 2012 (Hotels and Restaurants category) recently.

Organised by the National Council for Occupational Safety and Health (NCOSH), the award is presented to recognise organisations' excellence in work-related health and safety performance.

General manager Mary Ann Harris said winning the prestigious award was a matter of great pride and joy for the hotel.

She said the award was a testament to the fact that Eastin Hotel Penang was a great place to work, play and stay.

"Our OSH team, led by safety and security manager R. Anpualagan, worked relentlessly to ensure a high level of safety and health for our guests and staff," she said.

"We believe promoting a healthy and safe working environment gives our guests a greater sense of well-being."

She said it also contributed to higher productivity and cost savings among staff because there were fewer accidents.

The award augurs well for the hotel's branding in the hospitality industry.

Strategically located within the integrated waterfront development of Queensbay, Eastin has won numerous awards since its opening in 2009.

These include the INPenang 2012 Award for Best Business Hotel and second runners-up in the Malaysia Red Crescent First Aid Inter-Factory Competition 2012.

NCOSH is the highest forum in the Human Resources Ministry where discussions are held about issues related to the direction, national policy and implementation of occupational safety and health.

NCOSH was formed by the Human Resources Ministry in 1995 under Section 8 of the Occupational Safety and Health Act 1994 (Act 514), and is a product of the government's continual efforts to make safe and healthy work practices a part of Malaysian culture.
