The Star Online, 28 September 2012

THE Menara Star Safety Campaign 2012, that started with a full-scale fire drill, received overwhelming response from employees.

In line with the Safety & Health Campaign week, a two-day programme was carried out to promote a safe and healthy working environment.

Star Publications (M) Bhd group managing director and chief executive officer Ho Kay Tat, who launched the programme, thanked the staff for their participation in the fire drill.

“It is important to have a safe and comfortable work place and we can never know when an accident will occur.

“The staff are encouraged to take part in the talks and activities lined up during the two days as most of us spend almost all our time in the office,” he said.

Star Publications (M) Bhd security and transport manager Sin Poh Yin, who is also chairman of the occupational health and safety committee, said the committee had been in place for the past 10 years, looking into the safety aspects of the company.

“The key to achieving safety in the workplace is to create awareness among the staff on what they should do in case an emergency,” he said.

Also present were Star Publications (M) Bhd group business director Calvin Kan and Star Publications (M) Bhd safety, health & environment manager Eric Sjoekoer.

During the fire drill, staff members got the chance to witness a demonstration on the proper ways to put out a fire and saw the first aid team giving medical assistance to ‘victims’ of the fire.

The activities lined up included health checks conducted by Sime Darby Medical Centre and vision testing by Subang Eye Specialist Centre.

Besides that, there were exhibitions by the Department of Occupational Safety and Health, Petaling Jaya Traffic Police, Eversafe, I-alert, Vista Security System, Perfect Protection as well as the Star Trackers.

A list of health and safety talks were also conducted during the two days.
