Company linked to Penang Bridge ramp collapse fined RM40,000

GEORGE TOWN: A sub-contractor of the second Penang Bridge ramp, a section of which collapsed in June last year, has been fined RM40,000.

Sessions Court judge Zulhazmi Abdullah fined TSC Heavylift Sdn Bhd the sum in default one year’s jail. The company paid the fine.

TSC Heavylift was charged with carrying out beam launching works for the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge’s land expressway project at the Batu Maung Interchange on Oct 1, 2011 without a valid Construction Industry Development Board registration certificate.

Two other companies have also been charged with regards to the collapse of the ramp on June 6 last year, and their cases have been fixed for hearing at the Balik Pulau Sessions Court from Oct 27 to 30.

Contractor Cergas Murni Sdn Bhd is charged with failing to undertake practical steps in ensuring the safety of the public during construction works at the Batu Maung Interchange Package 3A of the Sultan Abdul Halim Mu’adzam Shah Bridge, resulting in the death of former policeman Tajudin Zainal Abidin, 45, whose car was buried under the rubble, and injuries to civilians R. Thilasheni and G. Gajashaantini, both 25.

Construction company Giga Engineering and Construction Sdn Bhd is charged with failing to ensure the safety of its workers during the construction of the bridge, resulting in injuries to foreign workers Slamet Toket and Tin Maung Lwin.
