KUALA LUMPUR: The next-of-kin of three Bangladeshi workers who died in the MRT mishap near Sungai Buloh will receive RM25,000 compensation each.

Human Resources Minister Datuk Seri Richard Riot said the Government was in contact with the Bangladesh High Commission here and was awaiting verification of their beneficiaries.

“We do not want the money to fall into the wrong hands,” he said.

“The money will be released as soon as the high commission completes its checks,” he told reporters after launching the 17th Conference and Exhibition on Occupational Safety and Health.

Riot said the Bangladeshi workers had legal working permits and were covered by the Workmen’s Compensation Act 1952.

“Their families are entitled to a compensation,” he said, adding that investigations were expected to be completed within two months.

Riot said MRT Corp and Prasarana Malaysia Berhad (LRT) had taken appropriate steps to address safety issues at their respective project sites.

He said the ministry’s Department of Occupational Safety and Health (Dosh), MRT Corp and LRT’s high-level committee met monthly with Dosh acting as secretariat.

“I will make sure that this committee functions as an early warning system to avoid any untoward accident in future,” he said.
