Initial investigations show contractors at MRT site complied with all requirements, says Fadillah

The Star Online, 19 August 2014

PETALING JAYA: Initial investigations reveal that the contractors and subcontractors at the MRT construction site in Kota Damansara where a concrete span collapsed on Monday night complied with all requirements set by the Works Ministry, said Datuk Fadillah Yusof.

He said both parties were registered with the Construction Industry Development Board (CIDB).

“We have to make sure that all the contractors are registered with CIDB, while the workers have to have proper training and be certified to be on the site,” he told The Star Online.

On Monday night, a 300-tonne concrete span collapsed at the construction site. Three Bangladeshi workers were feared dead in the incident.

One of the workers, identified as Mohammad Elahi Hossain, was retrieved early Tuesday morning.

Fadillah said that Elahi had a green card and was certified to be on the construction site.

He added that they could not ascertain the identities of the two other workers feared dead and whether they had green cards.

Fadilah said that the Department of Occupational, Safety and Health (DOSH) and local authorities would also conduct their own investigations with regard to the incident.

“I hope the relevant authorities conduct thorough investigations of their own, and if it is found that they did not comply with the standard practices, action is taken against them,” he said.

In an earlier statement, MRT Corp confirmed that a span of the MRT guideway had dislodged from its piers and fallen on the ground below at 8.30pm Monday. The incident occurred while work to construct the parapet for the guideway was being carried out.

The span, made up of 14 units of segmented box girders, is 38m in length and weighs 300 tonnes.

No members of the public were involved in the incident as there is no access to the site. The location of the incident site is within the former RRI land near the future Kota Damansara MRT Station.

All work at the site has been suspended.
