KUCHING: Sarawak Energy is teaming up with local radio station Cats FM to spread awareness on proper electrical usage and safety procedures.

This will see Sarawak Energy disseminate information and advice on electrical safety via Cats FM for a duration of six months from now until April 16 next year.

The message will reach out to target groups ranging from contractors and residents to plantation workers in the rural areas.

In a recent ceremony at Menara Sarawak Energy, a contract on the collaboration was signed between Sarawak Energy’s general manager for Corporate Risk and Health, Safety and Environment (HSE) Marconi Madai and Cats FM general manager Mohd Iskandar Mohd Nawawi.

Marconi stressed the importance of educating people on electrical safety as it could save lives.

“One of the most common accidents involves excavation near underground cables. These are high voltage cables and once struck, not only would this interrupt power supply but workers doing the excavation can be seriously hurt or worse, die.

“Part of the safety messages targets oil palm plantation workers at risk of being electrocuted when harvesting fruits near low lying power lines,” he said.

He said people should not take these messages lightly but should be more alert to electrical safety.

Even at home, they should heed electrical safety rules to avoid electrical shocks or fires.

This collaboration is in addition to safety programmes like safety awareness talks in schools, to public contractors such as JKR, Water Board, Telekom, local councils and longhouses.

The company organises electrical safety awareness programmes at oil palm estates and distributes electrical safety rules book, pamphlets, leaflets and brochures.

Sarawak Energy from time to time organises corporate safety week, exhibitions as well as conduct safety audit and on-site inspections at electrical installations and power stations.

Sarawak Energy goes to the ground to educate the target groups on electrical safety, and intends to strengthen this effort through other means such as via the radio.

He hopes listeners tuning in heed the advice and pass on the message.
