PETALING JAYA: A construction worker was killed and another injured after a launching gantry fell at an MRT project site in Jinjang on Saturday night (March 3).

Sentul deputy police chief Supt Mohamed Rafiq Mohamed Mustafa said the victim was identified as Mohd Firdaus Abdul Mutalib, 41.

The victim's body had been sent to Kuala Lumpur Hospital for a post-mortem, he said when contacted by Bernama.

He added that the injured worker, only known as Zulhilmi, sustained injury on the leg and was sent to Selayang Hospital for treatment.

In a statement on Sunday (March 4), MMC Gamuda said the incident occurred at the MRT Sungai Buloh-Serdang-Putrajaya Line construction site at 11.40pm.

It said a launching gantry, which was being advanced from one span to the other, partially fell to the ground.

"Two workers who were working on the launching gantry were involved in the incident which occurred at 11.40pm on March 3.

"Both were immediately rushed to hospital and one was pronounced dead upon arrival. The condition of the other worker is stable," it said.

It added that no members of the public were involved in the mishap which happened within the confines of the work site.

MMC Gamuda said that the use of launching gantries for constructing the MRT elevated guideway followed strict safety procedures.

"Those which have been installed are safe," it said.

However, it said as a precaution, safety checks and procedures have been stepped up at all existing launching gantries for the project.

MMC Gamuda added that it had launched an investigation to determine the cause of the incident.
