Contractor fined RM500 over Aedes

The Borneo Post Online, 21 December 2013

KOTA KINABALU: City Hall together with eight Government departments and agencies recently conducted an integrated operation on five construction sites in the state capital.

During the four-hour operation which started at 9am on December 17 a total of three notices and three compounds were issued to those who had violated City Hall’s rules and regulations.

The offences committed included those in the aspects of safety, employees’ health, workers’ quarters and a clean as well as safe working environment.

According to City Hall’s Town Planning Director Alijus Sipil, the operation was aimed at ensuring contractors comply with existing rules and regulations at their worksites.

Action was taken as offences were committed against the Occupational Safety and Health Act as well as several other violations under vector control, cleanliness of the construction site, illegal construction of safety barriers and obstructing the fire hydrant, Alijus said.

“Three notices for offences committed at construction sites and three compounds for offences under City Hall’s Building By-laws 1951 and its Anti-Litter Law 1987 were issued to the contractors concerned,” he said.

One of the contractors was compounded RM500 after the company’s construction site was found positive for Aedes mosquito breeding, he said.

The operation was conducted together with the state OSH Department, Manpower Department, Fire and Rescue Services Department, Health Department, Immigration Department, Police and the National Registration Department.
